D&L Luscious Lawns – Step 10

It’s Time To Winterize

Giving your lawn one last feeding before winter really helps to make sure it has the nutrients it needs to get through the winter.  This will help it bounce back quicker, and healthier, in the spring.

Ferti-Lome’s Winterizer & Weed Preventer includes a fertilizer and pre-emergent.  In addition to giving your lawn nutrients it gives you another shot at controlling spring weeds before they start.

Spread 4 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. using a broadcast spreader. You can water it in or apply just before it rains.

It’s Time For Ryegrass

Ryegrass sprouts quickly and thrives in the cooler weather giving us North Texans the opportunity for a green lawn all winter long.  It also provides an excellent source of forage for grazing animal and can drastically reduce your need for hay through the winter.   Other benefits of Ryegrass include serving as a cool-season ground cover to help minimize erosion, good resistance to most diseases, and the roots break through compacted soil leading to improved soil structure.

For lawns we recommend spreading 10-20 lbs per 1,000 square feet and for pastures we recommend 20-25 lbs per acre.  With proper watering the seed should germinate in 7-10 days.

Your lawn will appreciate a fall feeding

Applying a good application of fertilizer in the fall will help give your lawns the nutrients it needs to get through the winter.

This fall application will help increase the density of your lawn.  In addition, it helps your lawn resist winter weeds and improves recovery in the spring.

Depending on your soil type we have 2 go-to traditional, slow-release fertilizers we recommend.  The slow release coating on these allows the nutrients to release slowly, over time to prevent burning and longer lasting results.

  • 21-7-14 slow release is recommended for sandy soils.  The application rate is 10 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • 16-20-00 slow release is recommended for clay soils.  The application rate is 10 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.

Looking for an organic option?  The MicroLife Multi-Purpose 6-2-4 is a fantastic, all-purpose fertilizer.  It is a proven performer for all turfgrasses, ornamentals, perennials, trees, flowers & vegetables.  This formula provides over 100 nutrients, minerals and vitamins and is 100% slow release and will not burn.  For lawns spread 15-20 lbs per 1,000 square feet.

Stop Winter Weeds Now with Pre-Emergent

Timing is everything – especially when it comes to pre-emergent.  These products work by addressing the weeds in the ground before they even have a chance to germinate. This is why it’s so important to apply them at the right time.  If the plants have already germinated the pre-emergent will not work.  Your 3rd pre-emergent application should be made at the end of August/first of September.  If you get too late into September you’ve missed the window of effectiveness.

Hi-Yield’s Turf & Ornament Weed & Grass Stopper with Dimension will control cool-season grassy weeds – most notably poa annua.  Fertilome’s Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery will prevent clover, dandelion, henbit & other broadleafed cool-season weeds.

Both products should be spread with a broadcast spreader and watered in.  You can apply both products the same day, but you’ll want to do them sequentially, not mixed together.

Managing Summer Stress

The heat of the summer can be super stressful for many, including your lawn.  Using MicroLife Humates Plus is a great way to open the soil, add nutrients and allow the root system to grow bigger & deeper.  By doing this you’ll increase the water holding capacity of your soil and oxygen flow to the plant is increased.  When you do water you’ll want to water longer (deeper) and less often.  This will help encourage the roots to grow deeper.

Humates Plus is easy to spread with a broadcast spreader at 5-10 lbs per 1,000 square feet.  It will not burn and is safe to use around your pets & kids.  It can also be used in your flower beds.

Summer Feeding

Now is the time for your second fertilizer application. Providing nutrients now will help your lawn get through the stress of the heat of the summer. You can use a broadcast spreader to apply your fertilizer on a freshly mowed lawn and then water it in. If you can time your application just before a rain that works too!

Insect Control

As you work to build the health of your soil you may begin to notice fewer and fewer pests in your yard, but it’s a long process. To help control insects we recommend Hi-Yield Turf Ranger as a good broad-spectrum option. Fertilome’s NaturalGuard Lawn Shield is our go-to organic option – it’s cedar oil based and creates an irritant scent barrier to keep pests away.

Now Is The Time To Apply Your 2nd Round of Pre-Emergent Weed Control To Control Summer Weeds

Pre-emergent weed control works by preventing weed seeds from germinating.  For the most effective year-round control it is best to apply it 3-times a year (spring, early summer & fall).  Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper is our go-to.

  • 1 35 lb bag covers 8,000+ sq. ft.
    • Apply 4 lbs/1,000 sq. ft. using a broadcast spreader
      • Setting 16 on Earthway spreaders
      • Water in for best results
  • Safe to use near trees, flower beds & shrubs
  • Controls weeds for 3+ months

Need to fill in areas in your lawn?

Now is also a good time to patch bare spots in your yard with sod, or over-seed with grass seed.
Bare spots are not only unsightly but an open invitation for weeds to move in.  If you’re patching with sod make sure you loosen the soil where the sod will go and clean it of debris.  Place your sod and use some weight to make sure it makes good contact with the ground.  Water it well and keep it watered for about a week. Restrict traffic on the new sod for 2 weeks so it has a chance to get established.
If you’re over-seeding with Bermuda the spreading rate is 1-5 lbs per 1,000 square feet.  You can broadcast spread it and water it in.

**Please note: if you’re planting to overseed with Bermuda you’ll need to skip the pre-emergent application this round – otherwise your Bermuda won’t come up!

Spring Fertilizing

Now (mid-April) is a good time for your first fertilizer application of the year.  Applying these nutrients now will give your lawn the nutrients it needs to set it up for summer. You can use a broadcast spreader to apply your fertilizer on a freshly mowed lawn and then water it in.  If you can time your application just before a rain, that works too!

Mulch

Now is a good time to add mulch to your landscape as well.  Not only will it freshen up the look it provides a great weed barrier, allows the soil to soak up more water and reduces water loss from evaporation.

Spring Weed Control

The weeds you’re (maybe) seeing now are cool season weeds that could have been prevented by your fall (September) application of pre-emergent. It’s best to get those under control as quickly as possible to give your yard the best chance at a great summer. The best way to keep a weed free lawn is by having healthy soil for grass to thrive. Spring weed control can be tricky, though, as many commercial weed control products need temperatures of 70+ to work.

Henbit

Ferti-Lome’s Weed Free Zone is an exception.  It controls over 80 of the toughest broad-leaf weeds and can work in temperatures as low as 45 degrees.  Weed Free Zone is safe to use on Bermuda, St. Augustine, Ryegrass and Fescue.
